What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been used in China for over 2,000 years. It was introduced into Western countries in the early 1970's. Acupuncture is the gentle insertion of hair-fine solid needles into specific points (called "acupoints") on the body to stimulate the flow of one's Qi (pronounced chee) or natural healing energy. Sometimes, rather than just inserting a needle into an acupoint, the practitioner may choose to apply heat to the point, or stimulate it with very low voltage electricity. These techniques are called "Moxibustion" and "Electro-acupuncture". They are additional tools that an acupuncturist may use to further stimulate the natural healing powers of one's body.

Is it Safe?

Acupuncture treatment is drug-free and has no side effects or dependency. However, you should always inform your practitioner about all pre-existing conditions, the names of all medications you are taking, whether you are, or could be pregnant, and if you have a cardiac pacemaker or cosmetic implants.

Your acupuncturist will be able to evaluate your specific situation with this information to ensure the best results.
Since the discovery of AIDS more and more acupuncturists choose to use disposable acupuncture needles.
This type of needles come in sterile containers, are used once, and then disposed of.
So you don't need to worry about infectious diseases if you are treated with disposable needles.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very thin. From ten to fifteen acupuncture needles can fit into one conventional hypodermic needle. There is no discomfort when the needle goes through the skin but a slight tingle. When the needle reaches the acupoint there is another sensation described as heaviness or a dull ache which is known as acupuncture sensation. The sensation felt is generally acceptable and lasts only 1 or 2 seconds. The needles are either withdrawn immediately or left in for up to twenty or thirty minutes, during this time there may be a pleasant feeling of relaxation.

What Can Acupuncture Treat?

Each system of medicine has its own areas of greatest effectiveness. Acupuncture excels in pain control and treating nerves system problems, stress related disorders and some chronic problems. For example; anxiety states, arthritis, asthma, back pain, chronic fatigue, depression, facial paralysis, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, infertility, IBS, menstrual problems, migraines, sciatica, skin complaints, sinusitis etc. Extensive practice and research have also shown acupuncture's effectiveness in helping stop smoking, addiction and many other conditions.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

When we insert needles into the skin we can see that the skins around the needles become red. This induced scientists to suppose that certain hormones are released by the pricking of the needles. These hormones might be pain killing, stimulating the circulation and also cortisone but produced by the human body itself.

In the terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the energy of the body is distributed through 12 main energy meridians (or called channels). Each meridian is associated with an organ. The chronic over or under activity of any of these meridians will cause the organ to work less effectively and disease will result. Acupuncture points are only doors to energy channels within the body. By closing or opening these channels we can bring the energy flow into harmony. Thus the patient himself has ability to overcome his problems.
